Prince Edward Island or P.E.I as some call it is a maritime province covering a main island and a few smaller islands. P.E.I is the smallest province in land area and population within Canada. The island has other names such as: “Garden of the Gulf” because of the lush agricultural lands covering the province. PEI joined the Canadian confederation in 1873 becoming the seventh province of Canada.
According to the 2009 estimates, Prince Edward Island has 141,000 residents. It is roughly at 5,700 km2 (2,200 sq mi) in size, in the world it is the 104th largest island, and within Canada it is the 23rd largest island. The island was named after and for Prince Edward (1767–1820), the father of Queen Victoria.
